The Girlfriend Experience is a 2009 experimental drama film shot in New York City. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars adult film actress Sasha Grey.A rough cut was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2009.The film has also been made available on Amazon Video on Demand as a pre-theatrical rental. Soderbergh mentioned Michelangelo Antonioni's Red Desert and Ingmar Bergman's Cries and Whispers as influences. The film is also notable because it was produced for 1.3 million dollars and was shot with a relatively inexpensive RedOne camera.

Plot : Chelsea (real name Christine) is a New York escort who specializes in offering the girlfriend experience. She finds that lately her clients are spending less and less on her services, and are troubled by the financial crisis, a topic they raise frequently in her company. She is also interviewed by a journalist, who quizzes her about her work and personal life. She goes from client to client performing her services, and discussing plans for opening her own boutique and other ventures that will hopefully bring in more money.

She lives with her boyfriend Chris, a personal trainer also struggling to make ends meet. Chelsea and Chris see each other under the common understanding that Chelsea can both perform her services and date Chris, as long as she does not get emotionally involved with any of her clients. Chris is asked by one of his clients to go to Las Vegas for a weekend away, which Chris sees as an opportunity to advance his business plan. He initially turns down the offer considering Chelsea would not like him to go without her. In the meantime Chelsea meets "The Erotic Connoisseur", a prominent yet sordid website operator who publicly rates escorts. After she rejects his advances he blacklists her.




Chelsea then meets David, a first-time client and writer from Los Angeles. They emotionally connect after she opens up about her experience with "The Erotic Connoisseur". After their first date, and although David is married with children, he wants to spend a weekend away with her. Chris and Chelsea argue and break up. They go their separate ways for the weekend with their respective clients. Chris flies to Vegas to party with his client and friends. When Chelsea goes to pick David, he backs out. She returns to New York alone.
